 Between Hawa and Shahwah

What’s the difference between hawa al-nafs and shahwat al-nafs? The desires of whims vs lusts?

We have physical impulses like lust, over eating and greed. They are desires that have root in our biology, and they are excesses of things we actually need for survival.

Now “hawa” or whimsical impulses are desires that have no root in our biology. As a result, these desires are always random. They change from decade to decade or year to year. In fashion or in academia, there’s always something new and in vogue.

In contrast, the passions or “shahwat al-nafs,” never change even from the time of the first humans; it’s always food, lust, fame, wealth & power.
